ALEXANDER ‘Cool Ruler’ Maseko has confirmed the indefinite postponement of the Highlanders Football Club legends reunion on Saturday.

Maseko was forced to postpone the event due to enhanced COVID-19 travel restrictions brought about by the emergence of a new variant of what has become a global pandemic.

The event which was expected to be held at the Highlanders Clubhouse had been organised and sponsored by Maseko’s Talent Focus Sports Management company and had been dubbed ‘The Highlanders Football Club ’80 – ’96 Legends Reunion & Remembrance’.

In a brief statement from his base in South Africa, Maseko told ezemidlalo.net that he was “saddened” to miss out on the chance to complete the reunion of one of the best eras of Highlanders’ 95-year proud history.

Maseko said: “After waiting until our respective Governments announced the news of enhanced COVID-19 restrictions to counter the new variant, I am saddened to confirm the postponement of the reunion celebrations planned for this Saturday due to the new restrictions now in place both in South Africa and Zimbabwe.”

The event was aimed at celebrating the life and times of ex-Highlanders players who featured for the club between 1980 and 1986 and reuniting the retired footballers, the local community and their former club.

The events’ main objective is to bring together retired colleagues who have not all been together in a one place since they retired from the game for a very long time. Maseko told ezemidlalo.net that the event was designed to allow the retired players to discuss issues concerning their welfare as well as the welfare of their club, Highlanders.

“In coming up with this concept for this event, I realised that many of us have not met or been together in one place at the same time in a very long time. So when a few friends of mine said to me Cool Ruler we have put together a little something to say thank you to for your service to the game, I decided to do this and share it with my friends and teammate from yesteryear,” Maseko told ezemidlalo.net when announcing the event.

In Maseko’s own words, the get together is aimed at evoking fond memories amongst these retired footballers, as well as, encourage better bonding, reigniting old friendships, creating business opportunities and grow goodwill networks.

The reunion would also have been used to pay homage teammates who have passed away over the years.
