FORMER Highlanders Volleyball Club star Thulani Maphosa has been appointed Malawi national team head coach.

The appointment is effective from 1 May 2022 and runs up to 31 July 2023.

Maphosa’s appointment came through the International Volleyball Federation’s collaboration with Volleyball Association of Malawi.

Maphosa, 45, is one of the most qualified coaches in the region and has done well in developing the sport in Swaziland where he stayed for over a decade having arrived there at the beginning of 2006.

He started his volleyball journey at Matopo High School before rising to national prominence with Highlanders and University of Zimbabwe in the later half of the 1990s.
Maphosa was elated with the appointment.

“I feel honoured to be appointed national team coach. I will do my best to uplift volleyball in Malawi during my tenure,” said Maphosa on Wednesday.

Maphosa’s appointment was announced by Jimmy Kaunda Volleyball Association of Malawi president.

At the height of his playing career, Maphosa was a good second tempo attacker and as a versatile player, he featured in several positions to solve many a coach’s problem on the court.

He established himself as a selfless servant of the game who was passionate with development.

He is an accredited Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) Coaching Instructor and is in the continental coaches commission.
