I vividly remember the handsome looks of Tymon Mabaleka who looked in control of the midfield and exuded the confidence of a silky performer.

The man was a great sight in Highlanders FC’s black and white.

I also remember well the exploits of the likes of Moses Chunga who for some reason played in just a 20m x 20m sized portion of the field on the Mpilo End of Barbourfields Stadium. In one match he entirely destroyed Highlanders, spraying passes and deadly crosses.

On the same spot Chunga shone on, I witnessed Majuta Mpofu piling defenders in an amazing rat-a-tat dribble that had the ball stuck on his feet.

I am the generation that watched Chita Antonio, Barry Daka, Gibson Homela, Douglas Mloyi, Shaw Handriade, Onias Musana, Mark Watson and Alfred Ngedla Phiri.

For some reason I cannot visualise the greatest of them all in action in my recollection of the legends of the game in action, The Mastermind George Shaya but I remember Bruce Grobbelaar and Boet Van Ays.

Years later I was to watch Dazzy Kapenya, Ronald Sibanda, dribbling wizards Malvern Longwe from Hwange, Mike Abrahams, Boy Ndlovu, Vitalis Takawira and Peter Ndlovu among the rest.

Wingers like Stanley Ndunduma, Madinda Ndlovu and strikers like Maronga Nyangela and Shaky Tauro I lived to watch and enjoy them on the field.

Football has always made my life worth living.
